When a child turns 18, they are legally considered an adult. This means that, even as their parent, you no longer have automatic legal authority to make medical, financial, or legal decisions on their behalf. For that reason, many of our clients are choosing to have their child execute the following documents once they are 18 years old:

  • Financial Power of Attorney: Authorizes you to assist in financial and legal matters, such as helping with bank accounts, lease issues, tuition matters, and other administrative needs.
  • Health Care Power of Attorney: Authorizes you to make medical decisions for your young adult child if they are unable to do so.
  • HIPAA Authorization: Ensures you are authorized to receive your young adult child’s medical information and communicate with doctors and healthcare professionals on their behalf.

These documents are affordable, straightforward to prepare, and can make a huge difference if an emergency or unexpected issue arises. Please contact our office if you would like assistance  in preparing these documents for your child.
